representing in the schools

This past Friday, the Yew Chung International School of Beijing had a free dress day for students (who are usually in uniform). I came dressed in shorts, my fresh new Maia shirt, and some pimped out aviators (thanks to Nate B. for the hook up!), but even cooler than that, two of my middle school students came rocking REVO and BICF Action! shirts. Needless to say, it was around this time that I flipped out, forgot what I was presenting in lecture, and jumped onto a stool to represent my flashy fluorescent Subtitle to the rest of the class.

From: Kristi Dahlstrom
To: Michael Lu Subject: A Short Story Date: Thu, 1 Apr 2010 19:59:59 -0700 (PDT)
A Short Story for Mike Lu by Kristi Dahlstrom Once upon a time, a teacher named Kristi received a nice sticker from a t-shirt purveyor named Mike. (The sticker was really just part of the packaging with a t-shirt she'd purchased but hasn't paid for yet, a fact that she hopes Mike will remind her of before she leaves the country in June.) Kristi liked the sticker, so much in fact that she affixed it to a commuter mug. The mug is trendy. So is the sticker. The mug is dishwasher safe. The sticker is not. Now the sticker, perpetually damp for two months, has disintegrated away entirely, leaving Kristi only with the hope that there are more somewhere and the resolve that, should another sticker come her way, she will treat it better. The End
Kristi, I appreciated your story so much that I decided to make something a little more sustainable for you (actually, my friend Lisa actually did the fine craft work). A couple of Starbucks “Design Your Own Tumblers” later, I’ve got a couple options for you to choose from.
Just remember, they’re still hand wash only!
REVO Beijing

short+savage is repping out in Shunyi (northeast Beijing) this Friday night! We were asked to design a shirt to raise funds and awareness for Revo, a movement and Art Show With Heart! to help out schools and students in West Papua. The design is based on the portrait of a West Papuan child and the Morning Star, the flag of West Papua. The sleeve design is a tribal pattern from the peoples of Irian Jaya, and the Subtitle reads: “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’” Mad props to the Stage One Crew for hooking it up again!!

Well, no, that’s not entirely true. As you can tell from the picture below, we’re really ALL black sheep here at short+savage. From our frisbee-loving, coffee-obsessed Director of Operations, to our Renaissance Fair roaming, disco-ball-wearing other Director of Operations, to our designer who thinks he’s in a perpetual gang fight from West Side Story, we all know we don’t fit into the grid. And that’s kind of how we like it. Mad props to St. Shelby P and Homie Steve G for the rad photo!
